I don't believe illegal immigration should be ignored. But there was a time when a mother trying to get herself & her daughter out of squallor & violence by paying a fortune to a smuggler would have been seen as heroic. Is this where we are now?

The El Salvadoran mother and her smuggler didn't stop in Guatemala. They didn't stop in Mexico. She undertook the unnecessary risk of dragging her daughter across our southern border illegally instead of presenting at a port of entry with a legitimate asylum claim.
-
I don't endorse all her choices, though as I understand it, unless I have been misled, gang violence will no longer warrant an asylum claim.

I have been tweeting links all day to similar policies during Obama years. I am not suggesting Trump invented this problem, far from it. But harsh rhetoric against mothers with 6 year old girls does not strike me as a winning strategy.

Capitulating to manufactured mob hysteria and the time-tested kiddie shield strategy--whether on guns, health care, or immigration--hasn't yielded such boffo results.

They only read the headlines. If there's vid, or audio, they *might* click thru, but read the details? Never happens. Most of them probably didn't even do that. They just go by the tweeted description and the in thread comments.

They come here with the promise of economic opportunity compared to home. Put every business owner with an illegal on the payroll in jail for a year and they will quit coming here

And will you pick the crops? Will your wife clean hotel rooms? Who will work at Trump resorts?
-
We are letting in enough legally to do those jobs and there is also a work visa program. We are not dependent on illegal immigrants

Many don’t WANT to do menial labor. Too easy to be subsidized or get a payout. I’ve seen many instances where being asked to do dishes/take out garbage was enough to file a case with the Human Rights Division, nearly bankrupting hard working owners paying to defend themselves
