In game design we talk a lot about going where players are and engaging folks on platforms they’re already excited to be on.
@AOC’s engagement with young folks and doing so with internet celebrities (streamers) just feels like the smarter version of the celeb endorsement. /1

Also, playing a game is very vulnerable - you can lose and make bad plays, and streaming while playing is hard! Running commentary, managing between in game convos and your chat, is all more demanding than those who never done it might think. /3

That a serious politician is willing to lose in front of an audience, have fun, and be silly is incredibly impressive (and simply unthinkable for our president, even in contexts fitting of his generation. Like, imagine him on Price is Right or something and admitting he lost.) /4

I think many of us are worried about more unqualified celebrities running for office. But democracy lends itself to cults of personality, and I’m here for a competent, eloquent politician who understands this and builds up their celebrity through political / social engagement. /5
