That probably won't make it into my talk (or maybe it will) but damn it's powerful. Apparently women in Native American tribes were VERY powerful, but Euro-Americans refused to deal with them in negotiations because of their own hierarchical beliefs.

“...mind what a woman says, and look upon her as a mother – and I have Taken the prevelage to Speak to you as my own Children...and I am in hopes that you have a beloved woman amongst you who will help to put her children right if they do wrong, as I shall do the same...”

I'm researching a short talk..inspired by another talk, but can't remember the presenter. He used Native American tribes as an example of groups with purposefully repeatable, interchangeable, replaceable roles. I found this amazing excerpt from a Cherokee woman to Ben Franklin...

You have no idea how deeply I've been exploring this idea recently!

Love this point! I have to mention that was very passionate about this point in a side conversation at last year. He said that we "seniors" have to be in the room ready to "play dumb" if we have to to make sure everyone in the room understands!

Every Senior Engineer or above should also be able to provide a mentee as a reference. It's one thing if you did your job for your boss, it's another thing to help create a better engineer. Thoughts?

Some of the least productive developers I've ever known insisted that their development machine must be a Mac... I guess so they can look the part.

Shout out to and the book club here at Comcast! They just finished reading! It was so great that read all the way to the final 2 words to see "Michael Winslow" in the acknowledgments! Thanks for trusting me with your baby so early!

Let's try this again. A very well respected thought leader in leadership techniques explores the idea that "doubt" can be powerful to some people. Is that possible?

Hey I randomly asked this question earlier and later found your well written blog post. Wondering if you'd like to join the conversation?

Ok, ok, we'll just change the word to "challenge" instead of "doubt" we're good? I'll be honest, I do it with my son all the time...usually for things I know he can do. And then I act completely surprised and he loves that he proved me wrong. We laugh and cheer! I hope he stays.

Wondering if anyone saw the Gilfoyle vs HR episode that sparked me asking this question 😂? HR told him that he'll never get his work done ... he got it all done in spite ... and even he had to say...

One thing I LOVE about social media... There is at least one person on this thread who used this exact tactic on me before! lol! To be fair, [the person] only did it after [the person] already proved time and time again that [the person] believed in me as a developer!

Is this at all akin to "Radical Candor"? If you've already established a good relationship of trust and caring of the individual ... could you literally say "You seem to really shine when people doubt you! I'll have to remember that."

Question for Leaders (that's everyone): It is clear that with some people/engineers, they perform at a higher level when someone doubts their abilities or commitments. Would you ever consider playing the villain to get the most out of someone?

Study and play poker. Get used to seeing how many bluffers are out there. Realize that many of the people you think will call you an imposter are imposters themselves.
