Horgan points out what his original review didn’t emphasize. We will continually revise instinct vs. acculturation explanations because of the sheer complexity. It’s obvious Chagnon did not present the subtlety clearly and his views evolved with hindsight.

Not sure that’s true. It looks to me like Horgan isn’t to be trusted. You wouldn’t realise from reading his latest that the accusations leveled in Darkness have been shown to be false but they have:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkness_in_El_Dorado?wprov=sfti1 …

I don't know who either of these people are but Horgan would have lost me at "rational mysticism". Sounds a bit too Chopra-esque.

Agree about Chagnon, but your use of the word "woke" about something that happened decades ago says more about your state of mind than anybody else's. Ax grinding when you're right about the basics is still ax grinding
-
Woke is just a different term for the same shit, indentitarian politics that started with the communists. He uses woke as a short hand because it's simpler than saying radical left wing activism.

It was a very flawed book, but many in the media were quite receptive to its message and the American Anthropological Association’s attitude didn’t help.

Thanks for retweeting this. Alice Dreger wrote a great piece on Chagnon which you've probably read but others may have missed. Also, the end of Horgan's piece has a worth-reading exchange of letters between him and Dawkins.https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12110-011-9103-y …

As an aside: I literally just bought the 5th edition copy of Chagnon's book 'Yanomamo: The Fierce People' (haven't even received it yet). Was that a mistake? Can someone give the TLDR version of what was wrong with Chagnon's observations and conclusions?
