The liberal/APA/Gillette view of masculinity has it precisely backward: repressing emotions is not always bad, and expressing them is not always good. @sapinker explains it perfectly. Masculine virtues should be accentuated, masculine vices attenuated. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/opinion/apa-guidelines-men-boys.html …pic.twitter.com/xtbKF42Z4S

Hmm. I guess I need to watch the commercial again. I thought I was aimed at calling men out when they were acting like bigoted assholes?

Agree wholeheartedly. But we should not hide from the fact that there are aspects of "being a man," biologically/chemically, that make undesirable behaviors more likely. To reject that is just head-in-the-sand denialism that hurts the cause by being black or white about it.

The problem with the view that it is always good to express your feelings: it can easily harm others. This could produce a vicious circle and diminish your control over your own life. Most heated debates and anger and aggression start with someone loosing his temper.

But, in case of love, of positive emotions, emotions that bond, repressing emotions can be bad. So there is no "it always is …" but an "it depends". It can even be a good thing to let your aggression all out, if done wisely. Which means: you have to think about it beforehand.

You know what you call men who express their emotions openly, are ultra sensitive and reject traditional masculinity? MRAs

The ability to think before you show your emotions is self-control: The ability to find out what might happen before it happens. This includes the ability to repress your emotions when the outcome would be bad. Once emotions take over, your thinking skills are reduced.
