Thinking about the recent paper by and on urban grids and navigation skills – it seems Londoners are rather duped into griddy thinking by the tube map, we may fare better if we had to follow the geographically 'true' version (left)

The big test for this navigator robot is whether it can improvise a shortcut when its preferred route is blocked. Without a map, I suspect not

This lovely verb deserves more use – 'wildered in the fog' etc.

Daniella Schiller, who did this research, also found that socially confident people have particularly 'efficient' cognitive maps - a kind of neural signature for social skills. More on her fascinating work in my book (due 5 March)

People who use digital navigation aids like Google Maps to find their way in unfamiliar cities not only experience less, they also remember less. Time to dust off the A-Z?

Thanks to both and for choosing my book as one of their picks for 2020. Not sure I'd agree a sense of direction is 'essential for intelligence' though it certainly enriches our understanding of the world
