Agree! One dose = 2x people vaccinated The math is plain & simple Approach is broken. We do not do what makes sense: w/ rapid tests or making single dose vacc a priority when they work (both obvious benefits). We fail to do what's smart We choose perfect over most effective.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1337047714341785605 …

The BioNTech/Pfizer data is out—NEJM & FDA report. I understand this wasn't in the design & the long-term protection from single dose is open question. But given this sharp drop after 14 days after one dose, can someone explain why single dose isn't very very high on the agenda? pic.twitter.com/sxqwACGulz

Just to be clear - a booster dose is very important - As @VirusesImmunity has well described in her posts and I have discussed in mine too. But we are in an emergency. If 80% of the 2 dose effectiveness holds w a single dose, then vaccinating 2x ppl is the smart ethical approach

Also - Im writing emphatically but I’m still a scientist. We should try this. We should see if it works. We should have been trialing it from the beginning bc we know the manufacturing limitations. We can start the trials today. But instead we are starting more trials w 2 doses

Yes there are obviously unknowns, and so they will never do it. But I'm pretty sure it would nevertheless save lives. As with all epidemics, anything good you do early beats anything better you do late.

When its life or death, I'll take perfect. I'm not a product ready to roll off the line. I'm a human being. I don't care about efficiency in terms of my health. I care about my health. In its totality. This take is Twitter in a nutshell.

I tend to think medical/first responders and assisted living at two doses and then switch to single dose.

It also seems likely that one shot of the Pfizer vaccine is more efficacious than two shots of AstraZeneca. Should that be the case, we will face the ethical dilemma real fast (whether we want to or not) of who gets what vaccine.

I'm assuming the effect of just 1 dose would wane over time though. you only see results of the 2 dose regimen in this graph. they would have to have a separate 1 dose trial to see if they could "get away with" 1 dose

It also would’ve been nice if the government had purchased the additional Pfizer doses when it initially had the chance to
