What is the value of an old growth forest to Progress and History? Conservationist thought requires some decidedly pre-1789 sympathies. (Even using "left" and "right" you adopt the post-liberal mindset, seeing as they derive from the events of that famous Revolution.)

I would argue that the rationalism and materialism of that era and its children were heavily weighted towards the latter, and that the associated atheistic universalism that came to dominate Western thought was both new and indifferent or hostile to nature and the Earth.
