In the 1980s drug use in entertainment could not be shown casually. It had to be presented as nefarious. They are moving to have guns presented in the same way, though it's tough given action movies.

One of the more extreme examples of this was the film We Need to Talk About Kevin, where instead of even showing a gun at all the kid nonsensically shoots up the school with a bow and arrow.

Anyone who has a gun, and takes the trouble to learn how to use and care for it properly, is likely to want that investment to pay off, in the form of having a chance to use that gun and the associated knowledge. They might even go out and create a "chance" to use it.
