Our nation's growing ideological self-segregation is proceeding nicely. Yet another reason to be optimistic for the future.https://twitter.com/EricRWeinstein/status/1294391873230888961 …

I come back to this article every few months and it's still a joy to read, though not Joy Reid.

Observing from overseas, I see two choices for the US: 1) split like Czechoslovakia, or 2) split like Yugoslavia. I'm hoping for 1). I have family there.

It’s an interesting idea and has merit. Both Plato and Socrates argued that a United culture is key to political success. Obviously, we will never have that. But does opportunity outweigh culture?

This is my biggest hangup with your perspective and hopefully you can help me understand why separation is good. My main fear is that since everyone knows people are justifying violence against their ideological opponents, secession only makes it worse.
-
Yes, the civil war wasn't inevitable but at some point two opposing ideologies can't be neighbors. I support anarchism mostly but I fear that with increasing tech, the risk of permanent damage is greater, bc even if war is more costly, it doesn't always begin rationally

But who exactly is seceding from who? Aren’t these divides somewhat divorced from geography?

I agree we need some kind of divorce but still unsure what it will look like. There are not two distinct regions as in 1861, the current ideological segregation is between neighbors
-
Exactly. There's no geographical fault line.
