In 1934, Macmillan turned down her novel "We the Living" in part due to associate editor Granville Hicks' insistence. Hicks was a member of the USSR-led Communist Party. In 1936, Macmillan turned down Anthem because "the author does not understand socialism."

I didn't learn much about the USSR in school and I am currently trying to learn more about it. Im reading the Gulag Archipelago but find myself stopping every couple pages to Google a name or term that I'm unfamiliar with. Any recommendations for midwits to learn more about this?
