Well, changes will happen over a generation. George Bush won California in 1988 rather easily. Those ppl didn’t change party affiliations, but nobody talks of a party switch there.

What exactly is the contention here? The “party switch” hypothesis would certainly expect the state senates to flip much sooner than 40 years after the civil rights act, right?

If anything, the timing of these takeovers support the contention that it was a generational shift as people born after 1964 would have started voting in larger and larger numbers in the 90s and 00s

in much of the south, including texas, democrats have controlled legislatures and governor's mansions since the end of reconstruction. that has only changed within the last 20 years or so.
