You're lucky because you are a post-college aged adult. (I think you are). Nearby town with a college also has spectrum. You can probably guess some of the stories the students can tell about service or lack-of and payment "screwups"

From a few years in telecoms I would guess that the person makes a better commission putting it through as a new connection rather than an upgrade. Not justifying it at all but that's likely how that's happened.

Careful, they may try and charge you years from now if either account wasn't paid for properly. (I help people with fraud as my day job) I'd 100% make sure one or the other acct is closed and make them send you a letter as confirmation of proof.

50/50 it's some legacy BS with their systems that means its' 10x easier for a tech rep to just generate a new account and attach the modem to it than switch out the modem on existing. Is it cable/coax internet (hard macd attach unlike DSL style with login)?
