We are trained to regard tradeoffs as either unnecessary or immoral. There were no good options for black Americans a century ago. There were choices between bad options, and every individual black person had to make them. That is the definition of oppression.

How good are people at compartmentalizing? Is it possible that a normal person could see a stereotype like 'mammy' and just think "that is a very specific type of black person" without it causing him make assumptions about African-Americans across the board?
