The Democratic convention is three months away. Biden is only the de facto nominee. The premise that it is a given that he is the alternative to Trump is a lie.

I just can't imagine who they could put in that wouldn't drive away the Sanders supporters.

It could depend on how long DNC lets Dem voters sweat while Dementia (and possible rapist?) Joe is their presumed nominee The longer they wait the more willing many might be to embrace ANY reasonable candidate - who'll also remain clean of much campaign mud slinging/dirt digging

August 3rd, two weeks before the convention, three months before the election; Biden "voluntarily" exits, Hillary "reluctantly" enters.

Those are misleading comparisons as there was still a contested race that prolonged the campaigns. In this situation there is no contest, and to my knowledge, no historical comparison, at least in modern times, of a presumptive nominee being replaced by another candidate.
