Lautenberg easily won election despite it being a Republican year. No one seemed to care after the fact that they pulled this last minute switch. Meaning, there is some precedent for dumping a nominee last minute for political reasons and little precedent for thinking voters GAF

Biden is a placeholder to get past the primaries and the convention - the Bernie blocker. 'His' (but not really his) VP pick will be the eventual candidate after Joe has to step down for reasons TBD. The funny part is that Joe hasn't been cced on this plan.
