That's cultural capitalism. Start with a dubious claim, once it's published it's a property that can be used again, by you or others. The more that use it, the more can use it, the more it becomes irrelevant whether it was ever true or not.
The same impulse behind "he called the virus a hoax". You could argue instead that he called pandemic a hoax, but they figure they can get a better value with the other claim.
