If my takeway from Haidt can be summed up, it would be: The human mind asks itself "What do I need to be true in order for my conviction to be warranted?" and then acts accordingly. Recognizing this eliminates a huge amount of frustration when it comes to political arguments.

I see it everywhere in common conversation after reading his book. You can literally see the wheels turning in people's heads as they try make the truth conform to their preconceived world views. It's easier now to catch it in myself also

Which of his books are you and Michael speaking of, if you don't mind saying? Or is it his general thinking being discussed? I am unfamiliar with Haidt.

yesssssss conscious justification of sub-conscious choices! love haidt I think the fruit lies in picking at people's (myself included) convictions rather than their justification to warrant those convictions

Ahh yes. And then we arrive at "my convictions are the right ones because A. or B. is true. You'd know that if you knew what's true and what's not." And so it goes, round and round.

Exactly, babe. This is why I stopped getting mad at people who don't agree with me- they can help it no more than I can.

And in his most recent book what he needed to be true to support his thesis was the 'Fine People' hoax. He based his whole apologia for leftist violence on a precarious and discredited pretext.

I don’t NEED this to be a front for all the nefarious shit going down under the fog of this thing. We are so totally getting screwed by an anesthetic authoritarian technocratic proctologist’s gloved fist.
