Uppity New Yorkers actually get angry when addressed with respect, due to their own ignorance. Ma'am is NOT short for Mammy, it is the abbreviated Madam. You look like an asshole when you get indignant. I'm from NYC and moved South. Southern hospitality is genuine.

I'm from the south and tbh, some people really aren't genuine with the "hospitality". Plenty of passive aggressive southerners.

Smile at your face and talk behind your back, as a southerner it is one of my least favorite parts of the present South.

I was once told by A-No.1 that the iconic assholery of NYC social interaction is a function of a lack of shared cultural norms, putting social enforcement in the hands of every individual in every circumstance.

Well atleast in the south respect isnt a matter of the personal its a series of ingrained notions that one does to another person. Such that to respect someone from a southern perspective is to do X,Y,Z. Just to shed some cultural light on the matter.

In essence one does not have respect for a person which then leads to a certain behavior in regards to that person. Rather respect is something done to another person. But think of that system what you will.

Especially if there’s no bad intent. The controlling nature of speech right now is ridiculous. How about you stop telling me how to speak and I’ll continue to do the same?

And that's the catch isn't it? If we were tk bump into each other in the street, I wouldn't know what you would want to be addressed as, so I would default to sir to be polite as I was raised. But if I did know you and how to address you, I would do that too. It's just polite.

In most cases respect is how you treat someone and not how you address them.
