It is very odd that males can have very strong, intense friendships but the language for it is not there It all sounds awkward at best (even disregarding any sort of gay subtext) The camaraderie between military members is extreme but the words are not there. No clue as to why

I always tell my friends, especially my fellow Green Berets - that I love them. For us, love is a decision, not an emotion. Some guys aren't as comfortable verbalizing it, true. But if a man will kill or die for you, and you'll do the same for him - that's love.

Gotcha, thank you sir! I appreciate you, as
@JoeTalkShow so wonderfully puts it

If you call it brotherhood it makes it a family thing and removes the homosexual undertones a bit.

I'll bet that in cultures where men and women operate in different spheres such language exists because no chance of misconstuing it for being romantic.

Males in other cultures hold hands as a sign of affection.

There are words, but they're given privately. Men get uncomfortable expressing strong feelings, so we do a lot of it behind closed doors. In public the most you'll see is knowing looks and good natured verbal abuse. At least that's what I've experienced in the military.

The MMA fight team I was on was similar. One vital component was booze. Celebratory or conciliatory drinking gives men an "excuse" to offer genuine thanks and fraternal affection with bear hugs, back slaps, and words of encouragement that would otherwise seem out of place.

My current affectation is “If I loved this guy any more I’d have to change pronouns.” Which really doesn’t make much sense, but it sounds good and conveys the meaning.

A lot of them just engage in recreational activities where they spend their time focusing not on each other, but on something else with each other's help, competition, or whatever. Sometimes they all they need is each other's presence, and nothing more.
