Perhaps racism is fundamentally classism, biologically speaking? Racism is a hyperactive threat avoidance mechanism gone awry. Prior to a more globalized society, it would have been evolutionarily prudent to treat those who look different as a potential threat.

And classes are typically going to form (initially, at least) around some type of obvious common trait. For those inclined, complexion would have been an useful proxy once upon a time.
