Makes them feel like an equal to their favorite author if they find a mistake then it means to them that the author is just as human and fallible as them. So I suppose you can chalk it up to a crab in bucket mentality.

They consider you intelligent and want you to feel as if they are on your level. "I noticed your mistake, now you can acknowledge me as your equal"

I would go further and say they want to feel superior to you. "You made a mistake and I pointed it out to you. That means I'm better than you."
