Why do people think working harder is a good thing? Isn't best to be effective on what you do than be worse and work harder?

A reason many people give up on pursuits of achievement, they see their role models as effortlessly doing x and no matter how vociferously they explain the work it took to get there, the beginner does not believe it to be more than a honing of natural talent.

An aside: it’s considered very gauchè to compliment a Japanese Carpenter. They have such an extraordinarily high skillset that only someone with more expertise and skill could recognize whether their craftwork is “good” or not. They find it deeply unsettling.
