At some point conservatives decided that government should not be used to advance the common good. And at that point conservatism became limp, shallow, and ineffectual. It also divorced itself from its own intellectual history. And that in a nutshell is why the Left always wins.

That’s a good question. I don’t think there was one definitive moment in time. More of a gradual shift over decades.

Conservatives have been losing control of the culture for a long time, but the sexual revolution pretty much spelled the end. Even those that proclaimed to have some desire for a more moral world were living lives that included drugs and casual sex.
