I have learned in the past couple of weeks that a close friend and a close friend-in-law were both the subjects of prolonged abuse as children. Neither knew how to grapple with this for years, nor did the people they told have the framework for how to address it.

I think the one thing that helped the most was having these people understand that they are not unique, and that there are mechanisms in place to make the situation better.

A girl in my high school went to her parents to let them know her brother had been raping her and they dismissed her out of hand. I think about her all the time. There needs to be a system in place where she would know what to do & the people she confided in would know as well

I went through this as a child, bullied extensively from 3rd through 8th grade, and as an adult I have told next to nobody about it, despite its influence on me growing up. I came to terms with that in my early 20s.
