Just spitballing. Maybe he just isn't enough of a household name? Most of his public service was under a friendly administration so he wasn't the lightning rod for his party's advancements. But yeah, you're right, that explanation feels hollow.

He's already retired. In the same way Byrd doesn't really resonate with the public, Hastert isn't a present threat that they can mobilize against. Or maybe they don't want to shine the light too close the hundreds of thousands of $'s spent on covering up sex crimes in congres.
