I’m almost certain they are including debt as well. Someone with a college degree plus $5,000 saving — but $60,000 in tuition debt — is considered negative $55,000 wealth in his equation, despite whatever the asset-value is of the college degree.

For a lot of people, the college degree is worth the negative of whatever is the value of the outstanding debt, all the way to up to when (if) it reaches zero.
