Gotta keep the uselessly bloated education industry booming. "jUsT eLiMiNaTe sTuDeNt LoAnS" - all while ignoring the key causes for the debts in the first place. Extremely inflated administrative overheads and worthless textbooks that cost as much as a car lease.

Or even medical debt. I worked in billing in both the student loan and med industries. Student debtors generally understood that they signed up for their situation. It was a lot harder persuading someone to take responsibility for $2K+ for a broken leg they didn't ask for.

Colleges have taken advantage of their positions as gatekeepers to a vast swath of the economic opportunity in America and have become predatory. I don't think cancelling loan debt is the answer at all but something is going to have to happen.
