Little known fact: phone calls in prison (to anyone but a lawyer) are a PRIVILEGE not a right
-
True, but it's good for the public long-term for prisoners to maintain family relationships & although there is special monitoring equipment required that is rightfully charged to the user it's unconscionable that states tack on the whole cost of prison recreation.

Law abiding citizen pays to talk to people they love Criminals in prison being punished get free calls to people they love
-
What is happening is a company gets a contract to provide phone service. It's a monopoly and the charge a couple dollars a minute that is paid by the family of the prisoner. It shouldn't be free but it's shouldn't be the way it is. This includes people awaiting trial
