It's clear that the Constitution isn't self-reinforcing, but I think it has functioned as an important guidepost at various times. It hasn't stopped the growth of gov't, but has slowed it to an unknowable degree. All else being equal, I'd rather it be in place than not.

If you look at the Constitution as something that was designed to limit government then you can’t view it as anything but an abject and complete failure. That’s all it was supposed to do. And it has failed, spectacularly
