Oh my god- just discovered the most amazing article from 1974 in my Friday lunchtime trawl of The Times archive: "One man's philanthropy is another man's tax burden" If you're interested in historical context re critiques of philanthropy (esp foundations) you need to read this:

A my favorite details from my diss: it turns out no one called CUNY the "Harvard of the working class" in the 1930s because in the 1930s no one thought it took brains to get into Harvard. The term was coined by CUNY-grads-turned-neocons in the 1960s, after Harvard hired them.

"Funding programs as community-building opportunities" describes both the best part of my job and the part I think requires the most additional thought/effort. Luckily I have colleagues in and that are especially good at keeping this front-of-mind always.

This is an excellent view into how to manage web projects over time that is anchored in the work of a digital humanities lab. I think their approach is relevant outside of DH, and illustrates a form of web archiving work that isn't often discussed.

Just read yet another great paper by Peter Dobkin Hall. Constantly blown away by the amount of insight & quotable material in his stuff. Including this, on my fave topic of rationality and structure in charity . (From 1915 exchange btween editor of Harper's & Julius Rosenwald)
