Every couple of months, a preprint will go up on @biorxivpreprint that most readers will agree has obvious problems. The most common issue is manuscripts without methods sections, although sometimes it's scientific conclusions that would be easily debunked even by non-experts.

There's usually a chorus of people who call for bioRxiv to change the screening process to keep the issue of the day from recurring. Mostly, these calls are made without regard to the costs, either in terms of screening resources or slowing posting of non-problematic preprints.

But beyond the costs, there is another reason not to attempt to add new guarantees for a bioRxiv preprint, and that is Hyrum's Law. https://www.hyrumslaw.com/

bioRxiv has disclaimers on every web page and adds them to every PDF, warning readers that preprints are not peer reviewed. They might report information that hasn't been accepted by the scientific community. They might contain errors.

Despite these warnings plastered everywhere (including the
one with a big yellow highlight), some ignore the contract and argue that we should be able to depend on bioRxiv to exclude errors that are sufficiently obvious. I say no.pic.twitter.com/TjQ0ht5aBP

It is important not only that bioRxiv warn that preprints are not checked for errors but also that readers observe that posted preprints have errors.

Otherwise readers forget the disclaimers and start to depend on posted preprints getting an imagined level scrutiny that does not exist. Obvious errors make it clear that scrutiny isn't there. That you, the reader, have to think skeptically about every preprint you read.

End of thread. For context, I am not just a bioRxiv reader and submitter but also one of the volunteer screeners.
