Gave final exam for distributed systems class. PhD w sociology background asked if org structures have real-world counterparts. I realized: Standard approach uses consensus (voting) to elect leader, who is decision-maker until dead or term limit. Very much like democracy. 🤔

Hi Cherri : In light of tweets to re and recent bill, took little poll about user behavior with Digital Library. Plurality never use it. My interp: barriers to use lead to failure of one of its central purposes.

If a paper is published at an or conference, when downloading the paper, how frequently do you get it from the official Digital Library versus some other online location?

Yet another reason for : Publishers can't build working digital libraries. I'm an member, logged into DL. Hit download PDF. Asked to enter password again. Back to download page. Asked to enter password...ad nauseam. ...Quick Googling finds another download.

And as somebody mentioned: forcing academics to pay the something like $2000 for open access doesn't count. That's revenue replacement, not costs. And if anything is firmly against broadening participation and inclusion in CS, one of ACM's stated goals.

I have stopped reviewing any non open access journal. I wonder if it's time for academics to boycott serving on any program committees whose proceedings are not open access. It's clear isn't listening to *their* key stakeholders. cc

Submitted papers to NSF's new public access repo (yay!) take up to 6 hours to sync with for inclusion in reports. We sometimes forget the state of legacy enterprise systems. I can just see the ETL pipeline's scheduler twiddling its thumbs. ⌛️🥱

Twitter can be cathartic sometimes. To be clear, I've been at this game long enough to take such things in stride. And many of my rejected papers deserved to be rejected and were better for it. But poor reviewing can hit grad students really hard.

Reviewer #2 strikes again! "Outdated Software: Python 2 is legacy software which will be out of support on January 1, 2020. I wonder why the implementation doesn't use Python 3."

Hadn't planned to cite, but here's a cool use of OT, using Google's original Wave libraries, for building a cloud service that didn't trust the cloud provider (they could even be trying to maliciously/surreptitiously drop updates):
