The most notable thing about cancel culture is that nobody pleads for mercy or forgiveness. All the appeals are to a utilitarian logic of surrendering hostilities for peace.

I think that’s wrong. People say things and look back in horror at their ignorance, or insensitivity all the time.

The lack of a shared language of forgiveness is a real problem. @ebruenig wrote a good column on this.

A cultural liturgy that put forgiveness at the center when past misdeeds are uncovered would be a little easier to take if it were more evenly distributed. It can appear like an underhanded way to resurrect a culture of impunity for some and lifetime consequences for others.

Real mercy and forgiveness are great values that good people employ. But for most people mercy is something given when they're certain their opponents pose not further threat. And forgiveness is something given when they're afraid they might lose.

Because it operates on the logic of raw power politics. In that world, asking for mercy is an advertisement of weakness, and that only invites gratuitous cruelty

One only asks mercy from someone who consideres mercy a virtue
