I think that’s wrong. People say things and look back in horror at their ignorance, or insensitivity all the time.

A cultural liturgy that put forgiveness at the center when past misdeeds are uncovered would be a little easier to take if it were more evenly distributed. It can appear like an underhanded way to resurrect a culture of impunity for some and lifetime consequences for others.

Real mercy and forgiveness are great values that good people employ. But for most people mercy is something given when they're certain their opponents pose not further threat. And forgiveness is something given when they're afraid they might lose.
