My working theory is that hectoring "everything you like is problematic" media functions to repel people from progressivism and liberalism in nearly exact same way that televangelists made religion and conservatism repulsive.

We'll see. Some of it is-like televangelism-a sign of moral indulgence and decadence. But some of it is just the fact that upwardly mobile people are always obsessed with manners, and liberalism is more upmarket than ever.

Leftists in the Academy can't be fired and their captive audience (students) has to put up with their antics. Leftists in the media think they have the same kind of power to bend others to their will and are stunned when their marching orders are met with "Nope..."

i wouldn't say hectoring people for being problematic / having the original sin of being white or male makes them less liberal, but it sure as hell makes them less likely to support the party that is doing the hectoring.
