But, their analysis using BlastP for very short sequences was flawed. (BlastP is really not meant for very short AA stretches). They didn’t present e-values, which if they had would have shown that the similarities to HIV are not statistically significant. 2/5

In fact, the greatest similarities, where they exist are to other coronaviruses or generic viral sequences. So what’s the problem? Well, now this preprint has been picked up by a number of sources and used as evidence that NCov is a lab engineered bioweapon. 3/5

Even the presence of new sequences is itself being presented as part of a conspiracy, but logic would dictate that to be a new virus there needs to be some new sequences, otherwise it would just be a mutational variant of a known virus like SARS. 4/5

What bugs me about this preprint is that had this manuscript undergone legitimate peer review, these flaws would have led to a swift rejection and it wouldn’t be contributing to the conspiracy theories and fear surrounding this outbreak. 5/5

So preprints can be good: the community’s response to the report is made evident and if the paper is submitted for peer review, at least some journals will take these public comments into account 2/2

I agree. My lab has put our last two papers in
@biorxivpreprint ahead of peer-review and publication. I just think that there is also the potential for abuse when content is rapidly disseminated and taken as “fact” when it clearly isn’t. - Još 3 druga odgovora

I hate being right in this context, but it’s something I’ve pointed out before (in biorxiv comments as it happens). the relentless pursuit of clicks and eyeballs is Not Helpful, and potentially harmful. Preprints, esp in newsworthy fields, need to find a way to deal with that

There are now ~10 comments attached to the paper pointing out flaws in the analysis and conclusions. You and others can add your own commentaries and we hope you will 1/2

Do we need a twitter account that goes around posting "JustSaysInPrePrints" similar to
@justsaysinmice ? Because that has been a thing too in media posts, and I don't blame the mouse trials.Hvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi
