I’m very happy to post my first about a new manuscript we’ve just put on : This is work by Ben Cowley, part of his thesis jointly with Byron Yu’s group and my own (Ben is now a postdoc with ). /1

Life sciences are getting a lot of heat for animal-based research. Noted, there is room for improvement. However, a back-of-the-envelope calculation learns that we can make a far bigger difference in other areas of human activity. Food & Exp numbers, worldwide.

Hi Twitter, we are hiring! If you are/know someone with a Ph.D. who always wanted to use chronic ephys in behaving mice to figure out how brains multitask perception, attention and learning... we'd love to hear from you! More info here:

Not very encouraging findings in ground-truth study of 2p-imaging: "single-spike detection rates (at 5% false positive rate) dropped from ~40-50% when imaged at high-zoom to ~10-15% at low-zoom"(~400x400 μm) and "...detection of 2-spike events remained unreliable"

Neuropixels-style array is able to achieve intracellular recordings in cultures lasting for several minutes. To do so its pixels pass negative currents of ~0.5-3 nA, making neuronal membranes more permeable.

What does it mean to “understand” neural activity recorded across large populations? Our new review "The quest for interpretable models of population activity" highlights much good work in the field addressing this issue:
