Learning regularly from people of all ages seems to be both: (a) incredibly enjoyable and life-enriching; and (b) a kind of creative superpower. For instance, I know 80 year olds with mentors in their 20s, 30s, and 40s; it's amazing what it does for them.

A way I like to think: in terms of mutual mentorship. Yes, I'm learning a lot from them. But also vice versa. And pretty much all the time.

Agreed! But then, what would you say the difference is between a respected peer/colleague/friend and a "mentor"?

Provided - as this a big caveat - you take care to learn a lot from them, there is no difference. Many people seem to me to be relatively uninterested in learning from their friends.
