What, if anything, lies beyond language? Are there modes of thought and communication that are strictly more powerful than language? Can we invent new forms as much more powerful than verbs and nouns (etc) as human language is more powerful than the communications of chimps?

This is a hard question to think about, or even to fully specify. It's particularly hard when one uses language to think about it.

This doesn't mean it's impossible, though. Mathematicians have figured out powerful ways of reasoning about infinity, using purely finite processes of reasoning.

Another analogy is to the way computer scientists have gradually developed more powerful ideas about programming languages: things like Lisp macros, lazy evaluation, higher-order functions, etc. These ideas were, in some sense, discovered, & can transcend earlier ideas.

The math/science examples here are great, but one thing I wish existed were better ways of communicating //emotional reality//, i.e., intimate interpersonal interactions are often difficult in part b/c a) many people are bad at expressing their emotions/psychology in language...

but also maybe because b) human language just isn't the best/most complete/isomorphic way of communicating our emotions/psychology. (I'm not sure about this, but it's something I've thought about––the limits of human language w/r/t intimacy and expressing our "souls")

Maybe one avenue is: what things might we want to get from language that we can’t? Music and dance, for example, provide experiences that language cannot communicate.

Powerful in the sense they’re more efficient? In principle everything that’s possible with Lisp or Fortran can be done in machine code. So too with some mode of natural language or thought beyond verbs & nouns. Whatever’s expressible in that, is expressible with verbs & nouns.

Maybe neural tethers, direct brain stimulation, will enable communicating what we can't quite articulate

Human meaning is not exclusively linguistic. For example, music is meaningful but its meaning cannot be adequately ‘translated’ into linguistic meaning.

We tend to go ‘back and forth’ between forms of linguistic and non linguistic meaning. For example when we try to communicate the meaning of an abstract painting by linguistically pointing at the painting itself or when a narrative painting ‘tells a story’.

This has been tried with constructed spoken languages. Lojban was designed to make complex logical constructs in language possible and better express contextual attitude and emotions. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lojban
