Wish I could tell my 15yo self that you can discuss the pros and cons of idea without taking a crusading position on it
Maybe learning to take a crusading position on an idea is a healthy phase to go through? Really learn how to get into an idea & develop it. It's a prerequisite to later learning to discuss pros and cons well. Problem is too many people get stuck in the crusading phase.

I think this is consistent with a three-stage model I've seen before: Stage 1. Learn the mainstream view Stage 2. Take a strong, potentially heterodox position of a particular school Stage 3. Realise the pros and cons of different schools and be able to draw from them all
