I find somewhat nonsensical/out-there arguments increasingly valuable. They can spark inspiration despite not being persuasive. Ideas generated this way are often more unique too, because they aren't just derivative of some concept you already agreed with.
Edward de Bono wrote a book about this ("Po: Beyond Yes and No") that had a big impact on my life. Admittedly, I read it when I was (I think) 9. No idea how it stands up, or even if it's in print... I'd love to reread it!
