A former colleague once made the argument that the academic job market couldn't possibly have any bias because no one had built a first class physics department from undervalued female (say) physicists.
Common pattern in papers in which the authors have a lot of faith in efficient markets: they often make apologies for why what they're proposing hasn't happened yet.
