then again i am also guilty of just 'pretty' art without much substance.
I much, much prefer "pretty" art to most "substantive" art, and believe that over the long haul it will seem more substantive.

It doesn't start with some intended social purpose, but rather with an intent to simply do his art - in this case, a biographical narrative - as well as possible. Tolkien's applicability, not allegory, again.
