that's a fair opinion. i still hold value in allegories because they provide a layer of abstraction to think in. i'm curious, how do you feel about art by artists like banksy?
Banksy is clever & funny & sharp enough that it often works. Very few artists are insightful enough social commentators that they can make it work, IMO.

gotcha. my feel about social commentary is that it's better when done with a genuine purpose to educate rather than to nag/shock/merely elicit a reaction.

I much, much prefer "pretty" art to most "substantive" art, and believe that over the long haul it will seem more substantive.

One issue is that the artist needs to have world-class insight into the issue at hand. If they don't, they mostly just seem juvenile & unserious.
