Here's one I heard from a friend: ICOs are interesting because for the first time they really incentivize the creation of new open protocols. SMTP, HTTP, SSL etc all arguably at least as valuable as Google/FB, but no value capture, so people didn't work so much on new protocols.

If ICOs (or anything else) can change that they're unimaginably important.

Curious if any of these ideas have been hooked into the legal infrastructure for creating virtual companies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_limited_liability_company … Sadly, that doesn't seem to have been implemented in a scalable way. But some government could probably be convinced...

In my view, THE deep question for crypto - including currencies, smart contracts, and traditional cryptography - is how to allow governance in a way that allows rules and code-bases to evolve in a *binding way* using a consensus / voting mechanism.

And this seems to be a fundamentally hard problem, at least as hard as the byzantine general problem Satoshi solved / side-stepped with
#blockchain. That's because we have impossibility results for voting AND computational complexity issues with verifying safe changes to code.https://twitter.com/davidmanheim/status/1146003976506236928 …
