Who has written a technical book (O'Reilly style)? What is a decent advance, royalty scheme, schedule of writing? Gotchas to watch out for in contract? Most of the advantages I can see being non-financial, but I am curious what the market is like.
I've written three books. None quite O'Reilly style, but sorta in the same wheelhouse.

Of course! Could you perhaps DM your picture of standard advance, royalties, and schedule with a publisher based on that experience? I'm not considering self publishing right now but I might in the future!

For technical books, I'd now default to (a) Kickstarter funded up front; (b) freely available and open source publication; and (c) with a donation button or Patreon to support chapter release.
