Distill is a great platform for explanation, but changing academic publishing formats is about more than adopting web standards. <1% of academia can write HTML, let alone D3. Changing academic publishing formats requires massive retraining, new tools, and new editing processes.

Sure. Distill is doing a great job pioneering a new editing process, IMO, and also doing a certain (limited) amount of tool building & training. That medium essay makes it sound like those things aren't on SIGCHI's radar, but maybe they are?
