6/ Underscores my view (cynical though it is) that 1) way to get 2 warring factions to peace? common 3rd enemy 2) best performing teams channel energy via the "we're great; they're not" mindset [as i don't believe the 'life is great' mindset is persistently attainable]

LIGO may be an interesting contrary data point. No real competitors, no "them". Yet a good case can be made that the observation of gravitational waves was the most difficult thing ever done by the human race.

That's a good one. Though being part of the team requires a vote by 2/3 majority—so still an us v them. I do think many scientists are motivated by the competitive "them" of ignorance. "i know something nobody else knows and they won't know until I tell them."

Extracting signal at better than 1 part in 10^21 is utterly mindboggling. They set out to do it in the 1970s, knowing it would take many decades, and persisted. My mind reels whenever I consider what they achieved.
