China's chief contribution in recent times has been the invention of a rapid manufacturing ecosystem which makes the entire planet's stuff. It is now working on its second invention: a world run on AI and data.
Interesting to look at Google Scholar's list of top AI researchers: https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=search_authors&hl=en&mauthors=label:artificial_intelligence&before_author=nHv4_3GEAQAJ&astart=0 … 2 of the top 20 are from Taiwan, none live in mainland China. (Scholar is a long way from perfect, but it's an interesting proxy.)

One could tell of how far Chinese companies are in Deep Learning is to see the latest project for at the Linux Foundation. Clearly western laggard companies are involved, but why so many Chinese companies? Is this a good tell?
