It's not clear how many of the authors had ambitions to write influential grand vision documents. Mostly, I think, they were obsessed with important fundamental problems whose time was nearly ripe - so obsessed that they stumbled on some very good ideas, which they then developed
A bunch of people seem to have been deeply influenced, and riffed off the idea in various ways. @rmozone made a _very_ fun prototype based on Wikipedia a few years ago, but it's disappeared from his website(?)

I experimented with this too, about 5 years ago (which is when the image is from). I made a bunch of such trails on various topics where the system would track your path through various web pages (not just wiki) and edited a graph as you clipped things as you investigated.pic.twitter.com/7AUancGHtJ

You could then later search through these trails and they generated regular websites. I ultimately abandoned this approach both because of layout issues and unwieldy large graphs but also the emphasis on what you found rather than how your thinking changed as you investigated
